| The volume contains the proceedings of a workshop on"Parallel Algorithms and Transputers for Optimization" whichwas held at the University of Siegenon November 9, 1991plus some invited papers covering topics related to thisworkshop. In contrast to many other publications on parallelprocessing and supercomputers, the main focus of thecontributions were "problem oriented". This view reflectsthe following philosophy: How can the existing computinginfrastructure (PCs, workstations, local area networks) ofan institution or a company be used for parallel anddistribution computation. The volume contains 12 papers of20 authors from four general areas: (I) the use of massiveparallel systems (data parallelism), (II) the use ofcoarse-grained parallel approaches on multiprocessor systems(control parallelism), (III) OpTiX - a system for parallelnonlinear optimization and (IV) using concepts from naturefor parallel optimization. Computional aspects of the workdescribed were carried out on a broad spectrum of parallelarchitectures ranging from shared-memory vectormultiprocessorsto networks of PCs or workstations anddistributed memory multiprocessor systems such as networksof transputers or the SUPRENUM. |
