| In Liberalism, L. T. Hobhouse explains the philosophy of what he calls "liberal socialism." Liberalism, as Hobhouse defines it, is the freedom from coercion. Crucially, this means freedom not only from government coercion, but from all forms of coercion, including economic coercion.
