The consumption of seafood has been increasing globally due to its nutritional benefits. However, it also poses a potential threat to individuals who suffer from food allergies, especially those who are allergic to shellfish. Mud crab, one of the popular shellfish, contains tropomyosin, an allergenic protein that can cause shellfish allergy. Therefore, it is crucial to identify and characterize tropomyosin in mud crab for effective diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of shellfish allergy.
In the study conducted by B. Sabana, the allergenic protein tropomyosin in mud crab was identified and characterized using molecular biology techniques. The study revealed that tropomyosin is a major allergen in mud crab and is highly cross-reactive with other shellfish proteins. The identification of allergenic proteins in mud crab is essential for the development of effective diagnostic tests and immunotherapies for shellfish allergy.
Furthermore, the study also investigated the potential antiallergic effect of cucumis sativus and cucurbita pepo on tropomyosin. The results showed that these plant extracts have an inhibitory effect on the IgE binding of tropomyosin, suggesting that they have the potential to be used as natural antiallergic agents.
The findings of this study have significant implications for the food industry, regulatory agencies, and public health authorities. The identification of allergenic proteins in mud crab can help in improving food safety by enabling better labeling and regulation of seafood products. It also provides insights into the development of effective treatment and prevention strategies for shellfish allergy. Furthermore, the potential antiallergic effect of plant extracts opens up new possibilities for the development of natural and safe antiallergic agents |
