ELMTOWNS YOUTH The Impact of Social Classes on Adolescents AUGUST B. HOLLINGSHEAD ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF SOCIOLOGY YALE UNIVERSITY NEW YORK JOHN WILEY SONS, INC. LONDON CHAPMAN HALL, LTD. 1 949 Copyright, 7949, by John Wiley Sons, Inc. All rights reserved. This book or any part thereof must not be reproduced in any form without the written permission of the publisher. Printed in the United States of America This volume is dedicated to my wife CAROL E. HOLLINGSHEAD and our daughters ANNE and ELLEN PREFACE THIS VOLUME is AN ANALYSIS of the way the social system of a Middle Western Corn Belt community Elmtown, Home State, U. S. A. organizes and controls the social behavior of high-school aged adolescents reared in it. It describes the relationships existing between the behavior patterns of the 735 adolescent boys and girls in the study and the positions occupied by their families in the community's class structure. Seven major areas of social behavior are covered the school, the job, the church, recreation, cliques, dates, and sex. The presentation of the material is divided into five parts. Part I discusses the problem on which the research was focused and discusses in some detail when, where, and how the data were obtained. Part II gives the communal, family, and social setting of the study. Part III tells the story of the 390 boys and girls who were in high school. Part IV traces the impact of the class system on the 345 young people who had left school pre maturely. Part V is a brief summary and conclusion. It asks the question What can we do to mitigate the problem this study poses Although the book is basically a scientific report, the writing is directed to the intelligent generalreader rather than the specialist in sociology, anthropology, psychology, education, social work, vocational and child guidance. I hope these specialists will find this volume useful. But, if it is to have some measure of value in making parents aware of the kind of society in which they are rearing their children, it will have to reach a larger audience. Therefore, I hope it will find its way into American homes and will be read by parents who desire to see what a segment of contemporary American society has done to the boys and girls reared in it I have relied upon two types of data to tell the story of the boys and girls, fathers and mothers, and other local people who make up the subject matter of this book statistics and Elmtowners own stories. The statistics may be viewed as the skeleton on which the muscles and skin of narrative are spread. The poignant remarks of Elmtowners tell a story the statistics cannot On the other hand, the statistics present a comprehensive picture of a specific phase of behavior for the whole group. The two have been blended in the text so that each supplements the other to give force and meaning to the report. This study is one of a series made under the auspices of The Committee on Human Development of The University of Chicago in Middle Western communities. It had its origin in a post doctoral research training fellowship awarded to me in April, 1941, by the Social Science Research Council, f The field work was done between May, 1941, and December, 1942, while I was on leave from the faculty of the Department of Sociology, Indiana University. The drafting of the report was interrupted completely from January, 1943, to December, 1945, by my service inthe United States Army Air Forces. The preliminary analysis of the data was completed at Indiana University and the first draft of the manuscript finished before I joined the faculty of Yale University in July, 1947. The data were re checked and the manuscript was rewritten at Yale. The modest history of this project cannot be completed with out some mention of the obligations I owe to the many persons Adolescent Character and Personality, by Robert J. Havighurst and Hilda Taba, New York, John Wiley Sons, Inc...
