De Morgan wrote in 1860 that Whately had restored the study of logic in England. Whateley's achievement was not so much in logic as in moral metalogic; he explained what logicians should have been doing.... Logic, said Whateley, is entirely conversant about language, and it is only as reasoning is expressed in language that logic can study it.
