Electroplating is a process of application of metallic coatings to metals or other conducting surfaces by electrochemical methods (electrolysis). Zinc coatings of steel components are known for many years as one of those high standards for performances in corrosive atmospheres. In order to provide the good resistance to corrosion with low coating thickness and low cost, electroplated zinc alloyed with small percentage of iron or cobalt or nickel have been developed. Zinc alloys (zinc-iron, zinc-cobalt and zinc-nickel) for instance, if sufficiently high in zinc content would still corrode sacrificially to protect steel, but at a much lower rate of corrosion without the voluminous corrosion product than pure zinc coatings. |
