Dynamic Simulation of Failure Risks in Corroded Gas Pipelines: Transient-State Simulation

| During the design phase of a gas pipeline, the pipeline's strength is verified based on transient-state analysis. The new pipeline is then assumed to be free of any corrosion defects. Over time, all hydrocarbon transmission pipelines tend to corrode. All current methodologies in this field are based on the assumption of steady-state fluid flow within the pipeline. Analysis of certain incidents involving corroded gas pipelines around the world shows that these incidents can be triggered by sudden pressure surges caused by transient phenomena (such as accidental valve closure, unexpected shutdown, or startup of a compressor station). To address these issues, in this study we utilize the combination of the SIMONE dynamic gas pipeline simulation tool and a structural reliability model to analyze the failure risks of a corroded gas pipeline under both steady-state and transient conditions. |
