At the start of the novel, the atmosphere in Devil's Ford is one ofoptimistic an ticipation as wealth flows from the earth and dreams of civilization unfold among the miners. Characters like Dick Mattingly and the Kearney broth ers engage in humorous discussions about their grand plans for the future, blending childlike exuberance with a rugged frontier spirit.
