Adventitious is from the Latin root advenire, meaning "to come or be
superadded" and in correct English the meanings tend to have connections
to accidental or casual occurrence. "...of the nature of an addition
from without; supervenient, accidental, casual. Commonly persons
ignorant of the correct definition and relevance of such terms speak of
"random" where what they really mean is "adventitious" or perhaps
"accidental". Essentially such incorrect terminology is a howler; it
differs from malapropism only in that there is no confusion of the sound
of the words. |
