This story is not written for amputees. It is not written for people with disabilities. It is written for all people. We all face challenges in life. It is a question of how we move through life that determines our state of disability. I faced several different challenges in my life, from the loss of a leg in the middle of a successful athletic career to facing life as a transgender woman. I even faced challenges as a parent. ABLE looks at the journey I took in coming to understand how my disability was more than simply being an amputee. It looks at the state of mind I lived in and how I chose to face the world around me.
Please join me in these personal pages as you look at your own view of disability and challenge your own understanding of this social construct we place on people with physical challenges like amputations, blindness, or other "disabilities". This is the second version of this tale. It is a greatly expanded look at what being an amputee has meant for me. I hope that sharing my story may help you.
