Picking up where Drink to Yesterday left off, A Toast to Tomorrow continues the adventures of British agent Tommy Hambledon. Tommy was feared lost at sea during a bombardment but washed ashore wearing a German officer's uniform. Having lost his memory, he thinks he's a German and in the early 1920s joins the Nazi party, eventually becoming one of Hitler's favorite and is named chief of police of Berlin. In 1933 he regains his memory and begins plotting against the Nazis. First published in England in 1940 and in the U.S. in 1941, this book--and subsequent ones--display more humor than was found in Drink to Yesterday, which helped to make this one of the most popular series in the genre. Drink to Yesterday and A Toast to Tomorrow were named to the Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone list of the most important books in the genre.
