This book is not intended for people who just want to use a computer to send e-mail and do homework. It is a humorous, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, guide for would-be computer "hackers" (also known as script-kiddies to real hackers) on how to live an alternate digital lifestyle in the underworld of the Internet. It reviews numerous aspects of this sub-culture, from codenames and attire, to the cryptic 1337 language that is prevalent in on-line conversations and chat rooms. It does not give detailed step-by-step instructions on how to write a virus, but reviews the nature of viruses. The reader will also learn a wide variety of different practical jokes to play on the desktop. This book teaches the reader how to be really annoying with tons of tricks the hacker wannabe can do with computers-while (whether he or she realizes it or not) learning the operating system. tapeworm has been developing web sites and hacking his personal computer as an obsessive hobbyist since the summer of 1998.
