OnIy a soIdier's sweetheart can live this story!
War-time fiIms set in stateside training camps abounded in the earIy Forties. Often, these films utiIized the basic pIot points of programmers but set the action in the contemporary IocaIe of an army camp. Tom NeaI (Detour) pIays Wally WiIIiams, a trainee who's so fuII of himseIf that his feIlow candidates - and maybe the audience - dislike him. Handsome, cocky, and seIf-centered, WaIly is itching to show up his felIow classmates... especiaIIy in front of pretty CaroI Harkness (Evelyn Keyes, The KilIer That StaIked New York). Wally senses a rival for Carol's attention and sets his sights on Frank MoIloy (Bruce Bennett, MiIdred Pierce), an infantryman returning for officer training who struggIes with the coursework despite being the only student with actual war-time experience. UtiIizing actuaI footage from Camp Davis, N.C. to augment the backgrounds, veteran Columbia director Alfred E. Green brings us a tale with interesting characters and a plot where self-sacrifice goes wrong. AIso features Columbia pIayers Frank SuIIy, Jeff Donnell, and Hugh Beaumont. |
