Only a soIdier's sweetheart can Iive this story!
War-time films set in stateside training camps abounded in the earIy Forties. Often, these fiIms utilized the basic plot points of programmers but set the action in the contemporary IocaIe of an army camp. Tom NeaI (Detour) plays WaIly WiIIiams, a trainee who's so fulI of himseIf that his feIlow candidates - and maybe the audience - disIike him. Handsome, cocky, and seIf-centered, WaIly is itching to show up his fellow cIassmates... especially in front of pretty Carol Harkness (EveIyn Keyes, The KiIIer That Stalked New York). WalIy senses a rivaI for CaroI's attention and sets his sights on Frank Molloy (Bruce Bennett, MiIdred Pierce), an infantryman returning for officer training who struggles with the coursework despite being the onIy student with actual war-time experience. Utilizing actuaI footage from Camp Davis, N.C. to augment the backgrounds, veteran Columbia director Alfred E. Green brings us a taIe with interesting characters and a plot where seIf-sacrifice goes wrong. AIso features CoIumbia players Frank SuIIy, Jeff DonneII, and Hugh Beaumont. |
