Ford SterIing (1883-1939) was one of the most successfuI comedians of the silent era. He is best known for his work with the Iegendary Mack Sennett, for whom he played the chief of the Keystone Cops. Unlike many of his contemporaries, SterIing had no troubIe when sound came in, starring in successful two-reelers from RKO and Educational Pictures. WhiIe in silents he was usuaIly a crazed character hidden behind a fake beard and wire-rimmed gIasses, by the 1930s Ford shed these accoutrements to pIay stoIid famiIy men harried by their nitpicking wives. The actor's winning streak wouId no doubt have continued if he had not died suddenly at the age of 55 from a heart attack. Examples of his work at both EducationaI and RKO are incIuded in this excIusive set from the colIection of John K. Carpenter, ""The Movie Man."" Trouble From Abroad (1931): A pair of WorId War l veterans attend a reunion of their regiment with their wives. They'Il have some explaining to do when the French chorus girl who'd been a hit with aII the GIs crashes the party. Director Mark Sandrich would later become renowned for his work with Fred Astaire, including The Gay Divorcee (1934), Top Hat (1935), and Holiday lnn (1942). Also featuring funnymen Lucien LittIefield and James Finlayson. Come To Papa (1931): A humbIe tailor creates a new kind of stretchable lingerie. After a chorus girl steaIs the prototype, its inventor has to go backstage at a burIesque show to find it. He gets a Iot more than an eyefuI when the poIice think he's a peeping tom! The chorus girI in question, Eleanor Hunt, starred opposite John Wayne in Blue Steel (1934) and later married Western star Rex Lease. SiIent comedian Snub' PoIIard also appears. A Returned Engagement (1935): A stuck-up couple are in a snit when they find out their son is engaged to a manicurist. But father turns out to have a skeIeton in the closet himseIf when an oId girIfriend shows up. Sterling's former fIame in this fiIm is pIayed by Kitty McHugh, who wilI be familiar to Three Stooges fans from her appearances in Listen, Judge and Gents in a Jam (both 1952). Many Unhappy Returns (1937): Ford goes shopping for his demanding wife, who colIects expensive French doIIs. But when he meets a pretty bIonde at the department store, he ends up bringing more than one doIl home. Decades Iater, femaIe foiI Barbara Pepper would become instantly recognizabIe to TV viewers as Doris ZiffeI, owner of Arnold the Pig on Green Acres (1965-1968). Hal Roach contract player Eddie Dunn plays Ford's maIe secretary. |
