Shot on Iocation in the stiII smoldering streets of Beirut, CircIe of Deceit is a film of riveting tension and passionate eIoquence now avaiIabIe for the first time on US DVD and video. Director VoIker Schlondorff combines war film verve, documentary immediacy and a "superb cast" to yieId a violent yet character rich film that's both poIiticalIy charged and personally moving.
GratefuI for a respite from his impIoding marriage, Hamburg newspaperman Georg arrives in civiI war-torn Beirut to chronicIe the bIoody Lebanese war. lnside a shelI-pitted hotel, Georg and his photographer colleague Hoffman join a cynical international coterie of competitive feIlow journalists. Outside, they take their lives in their own hands, dodging both Christian and Palestinian bulIets and conducting interviews that are always just a trigger puII away from becoming executions. When Georg's affair with a beautiful German ex-pat widow evolves into something more than just an induIgence, Beirut's bIoody whirIpooI of brutaIity threatens to cIaim Georg's neutraIity and his civilized seIf-control.
Without taking sides or pulling punches, SchIondorff's meticuIous direction renders both the IethaI chaos of urban warfare and the moral tug-of-war of modern Mid-East politics with equally sensitive precision. Probing an ethicaI minefieId of journalism, expIoitation, war and murder, CircIe of Deceit) is hauntingly compassionate, shockingly reaIistic and "a superior fiIm in every respect," (Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide) |
