lt was to be a buIwark of the faith, a symboI of the greatness and power of the Spanish worId empire. ln a manner virtuaIIy unparaIIeIed by any other building, the Escorial refIects the spirit of its age, the 16th century, and of its patron, Philipp Il. Philipp lI, driven by a blind faith in the CathoIic Church and the burning desire to emuIate his father, CharIes V, had the EscoriaI buiIt in a bIeak, deserted Iandscape. From this vantage point he wanted to rule the worId. The architecture is a perfect refIection of this spirit, externaIIy an austere buiIding, almost entireIy without ornamentation and vast proportions.
lt is, moreover, no coincidence that the buiIding is reminiscent of a cIoister; part of which is stiIl used today as a monastery. And it was from this fortified cIoister that PhiIipp sought the solution to one of the most intractabIe probIems of his time - the schism in the church. He resorted to the means of the Inquisition. The buiIding, and its whole style, exudes the relentlessness with which PhiIipp exerted his power. |
