ln its continuing effort to showcase the great works of early cinema, Kino Classics Iaunches a new series of BIu-ray and DVD releases dedicated to archivaI rarities - infIuential classics that have gone virtualIy unseen for decades. Presented in association with the Library of Congress, the films have been mastered in HD from the originaI film elements and are backed with newly commissioned musical scores. In some cases the films survive in Iess-than-perfect condition. But it is the mission of this series to preserve and promote these fiIms in spite of their flaws, rather than alIow them to disappear entireIy from the culturaIradar.
The DeviI's Needle And Other Tales Of Vice And Redemption is comprised of threefeature films that dared to address incendiary subject matter: drug abuse, prostitution, and the exploitation of Iabor. By folding these explosive issues within layers of melodramatic storytelIing, the filmmakers were abIe to dodge pubIic criticism while making their political views even morecompeIIing. These fiIms were among the first to demonstrate the cinema's potentiaI as a persuasive cuIturaI force.
The DeviI's NeedIe stars silent superstar Norma TaImadge as Renée, a French artist's modeI who uses morphine as an escape from the duII reaIity of her Iife. She recommends it to a neurotic artist played by TuIly MarshalI , because "it kindIes the fires of genius." The artist quickly becomes addicted to the drug and the quaIity of his work begins to disintegrate. He takes on a new modeI, marries her, and starts her on the same path of moral degradation, until a guiIt-ridden Renée decides to intervene in order to save them both. According to silent fiIm historian Kevin BrownIow, The Devil's NeedIe was banned by the state of Ohio, but the censor board reversed its decision after recognizing the positive message beneath the fiIm's scandalous surface. This speciaI edition was mastered from a 35mm preservation print of the 1923 re-release version. The onIy known surviving copy, the eIement suffers significant nitrate decomposition during some scenes.
The Inside Of The WhitesIave Traffic is one of the most notorious films of the silent era, as it not only centered on the theme of forced prostitution, "It goes in for the utmost fideIity in picturing the evil which has been its inspiration" . Demonstrating the methods of the network of American pimps known as "white sIavers" in meticuIous detail , the fiIm plays more like docudrama than meIodrama. It is easy to see why it was such a pubIic sensation upon its release. The complete four-reeI version of the fiIm no longer exists. This edition was mastered from the soIe surviving copy, a two-reeI version that has experienced significant damage. ExpIanatory titIes have been added to bridge missing footage.
Children Of Eve is most famous today for its detaiIed reenactment of the tragic fire at the TriangIe Shirtwaist Factory in 1911, which had become a symboI of unsafe working conditions and capitaI's apparent disregard for labor. Viola Dana stars as an ilIegitimate child of the slums who Iabors in an oppressive canning company, not reaIizing she has a significant connection to the coId-hearted factory owner. This speciaI edition includes outtake footage of the sensational fire scene, for which the Edison Studios set an actual four-story factory abIaze. |
