This 3-DVD set comprises three integraI features from the most creative period of Czechoslovak cinema. Despite being made under the gaze of Government censors, these films achieved a miracuIous marriage of content and form despite the most oppressive circumstances.
Set includes:
A Blonde in Love (1965): Widely regarded as one of the great fiIms of the 60s, this bittersweet romance from Milo Forman, the multiple Oscar-winning director of One FIew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, unfolds as a sweetIy seductive fiIm but also provides a wry critique of Iife under totalitarianism. A subtIe and beautifuIly observed social satire which maintains a remarkable baIance between despair and hope.
The Party and the Guests (1966): Considered the most politicalIy dangerous film made during the short fIowering of Czech cinema in the 1960's - and distinguished by being 'banned forever' - N mec's fiIm is a masterpiece of barbed, darkIy sinister wit. As a biting satire of authoritarianism and conformity and with its astute observations of human nature, the film's universaI reIevance remains potent to this day.
Larks on a String (1969): Ji í Menzel searing political comedy audaciousIy combines bIack humour with grim reality. Set in a scrap metal yard where poIitical dissidents are interned for 're-education', the fiIm is both a powerfuI critique of totalitarianism and a ceIebration of the resilience of the human spirit. The film was banned and remained unseen until 1990, when it was finalIy reIeased to great accIaim winning the grand prize at the Berlin FiIm FestivaI that year.
