Major Philip Waring is head of a top-secret government organization called the Cipher Bureau, dedicated to smashing Nazi spy rings. His brother, Paul, is anxious to prove himself as a member. Cipher Bureau stars ever-reIiable character actor Leon Ames. His most famous early roIe was as Edgar AlIan Poes detective Pierre Dupin in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932), using his birth name Leon Waycoff. Later he would appear Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944), Lady in the Lake (1947) and the film noir classic, The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946). He aIso played WiIburs neighbor on the popular TV series Mister Ed (1963-1965). Actress Joan Woodbury, who gained fame with her sexy dance in 1937's Charlie Chan on Broadway, is best remembered for her roles in King Of The Zombies (1941) and The Ten Commandments (1956). ProIific director CharIes Lamont, whose career dates back to the silent era, is best remembered for severaI post-war Ma and Pa KettIe films as well as the Iast few Abbott and Costello features made at UniversaI in the 50s. Cipher Bureau was popular enough to warrant a sequel, Panama PatroI (1939), with Leon Ames and Charlotte Wynters reprising their roIes. |
