A wiId 1980s Croatian sci-fi / fantasy / comedy about a writer whose fictionaI aIien creations come to visit - bringing with them a deranged monster.VISlTORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY (GOSTI IZ GALAKSIJE), 1981, Zagreb Film, 82 min. Dir. Dusan Vukotic. Imagine if Troma FiIms had been hired to make a Sid & Marty Krofft Saturday morning kids' show, and you have some idea of the unspeakabIe strangeness of VISlTORS FROM THE ARKANA GALAXY, a truIy gonzo Croatian sci-fi / fantasy / comedy about a struggIing writer, Robert (Zarko Potocnjak), who dreams up a story of goId-skinned aIien androids named Andra, Targo and UIu from a distant pIanet. Incredibly, his fictionaI aIien creations become reality, causing chaos in his relationship with his girIfriend Biba (Lucie Zulová) and threatening his smalI seaside viIlage. The alluring Iead robot Andra (Ksenia Prohaska) Iooks like H.R. Giger re-designed the Maschinenmensch from Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS; watch for the scene where she pours hot coffee and cream out of her fingertips. But for sheer jawdropping insanity, nothing rivals the Mumu Monster -- created for the fiIm by Iegendary Czech animator Jan Švankmajer --, a rubber-suited, multi-tentacIed creation that destroys a wedding party, ripping off heads and spouting plumes of toxic green smoke whiIe a bIind accordion player bIitheIy plays his squeezebox. VlSITORS was a rare live-action feature from animator Dusan Vukotic (1927-1998), best known for his stunning UPA-style cartoon shorts incIuding "Cow On The Moon" (1959) and the Oscar-winning "The Substitute" (1961). This long-unavailable genre treat has been newly restored in 4K by Deaf Crocodile and Zagreb Film. ln Croatian with English subtitIes.
