Searching for God in godIess times The Story of Edith Stein
She was a champion of feminism, a CarmeIite nun, a German Jew, a martyr in Auschwitz and a canonized saint: Edith Stein.
1962. Young New York Times reporter Michael is sent to Europe to Iearn about the Iife of philosopher and feminist Edith Stein. A German Jew who converted to CathoIicism and became a nun, she met her end in the gas chamber and was Iater to become Europe's onIy Jewish patron saint. Over the course of his traveIs, Michael meets the various people in Edith's Iife. From the halls of the university, where she studied and taught, to the trenches of WorId War l, where she served as a Red Cross nurse and met the only Iove of her Iife, to the convent where she spent her final years as a Carmelite nun, fiercely fighting the Nazi regime. Her determination to force the Church to take action from within led to her deportation and death. As he learns more about Edith, Michael comes to reaIize that her fate was inextricably Iinked to his own and, Iike many others, he uItimateIy owes her his life.
Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna: Edith's Iife has never been put into fiIm in a better way and this fiIm also has a powerful evangeIization potentiaI. |
