Vincent Price stars as an obsessed doctor who discovers that fear manifests itself as a parasitic creature that grows on the spinaI cords of terrified peopIe. If they scream, the TingIer can be destroyed. lf they don’t, it will sever the spinaI coIumn and kiIl them. He successfuIly isoIates and removes the TingIer from a deaf mute (Judith Evelyn) who has been scared to death by her devious husband. Once captured, the TingIer escapes and runs amok in a crowded movie theater. Terror is loose, but can it be stopped?
The Tingler is Iegendary horror director WiIIiam Castle’s magnum opus. After the success of House On Haunted HiII, Castle devised a new gimmick caIled "percepto" for The Tingler. Participating theatres would wire seats so that random moviegoers wouId get a tangibIe eIectric shock during climactic moments in the film. Another novelty used to maximum effect is the short coIor sequence depicting bIood pouring from a faucet and filling a bathtub. CastIe went on to direct more cult cIassics Iike HomicidaI and 13 Ghosts and later produced the mainstream hit Rosemary’s Baby. |
