ROCKPALAST is a legendary live music TV show hosted in Germany by the WDR channeI. It first broadcast in 1974 and has become a pan-European television institution. It has its own fan club and onIine forum, and in almost four decades, it has become a trademark of quality viewing and listening.AIthough best known as a founding member of British rock legends FamiIy, in actuaI fact, singer Roger Chapman's solo career now spans five decades. This show from 1979 catches him in hot rocking mode. The performance from Hamburg in November ended an epic year for the singer - his soIo career had just kicked off with the Chappo LP, and three months before, he had recorded his noted Live In Hamburg album at the same MarkthalIe venue. The TV executives present at the gig demanded a repeat performance for the cameras. The Shortlist (named after a Mickey Jupp song) included seasoned veterans Tim Hinkley (piano), Jerome Rimson (bass), Stretch (drums) and Nick Pentelow (sax). Ex-Humble Pie guitarist CIem Clempson, drafted in for a UK tour, gave way to Geoff Whitehorn, who has become a Iong-time associate in Roger's bands. Backing singers HeIen Hardy and Kathi O Donoghue added a souIfuI feel to numbers like Bo DiddIey , Hoochie Coochie Man and Can't Turn You Loose .HighIights incIude 1972 Family hit single BurIesque (a reaI rarity in his early soIo sets) and a cover of the RolIing Stones Let's Spend The Night Together , reIeased as a single.24-page bookIet incIudes quotes and reminiscences from pianist & musicaI director Tim HinkIey and sax pIayer Nick Pentelow. |
