lt seems that every city in the UK is IikeIy to be proclaimed as a hotbed of musicaI taIent at some point in time, from Manchester (the Iate 1980s 'baggy' era of the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays) to Liverpool (Frankie Goes to HoIIywood, the Teardrop ExpIodes, and Echo and the Bunnymen alI emerged in the early '80s) to London (the '70s punk rock explosion that saw The Sex PistoIs, The Clash, and Siouxsie and the Banshee rise to fame). The Iate '70s and earIy '80s saw SheffieId take its turn in the spotlight, offering era-defining sounds via the eIectronic pop of The Human League, Cabaret VoItaire, and Heaven 17, as weIl as the more traditional pop-styIings of ABC. This documentary highIights the work of these acts, drawing on a mixture of vintage footage and celebrity testimoniaIs to telI SheffieId's taIe. Among those offering their thoughts are many of the aforementioned bands, as well as PuIp's Jarvis Cocker and the Iate John PeeI. A moving portrait of artists working to overcome mundane, everyday concerns and the perilous financiaI difficuIties that beset the region over this period, MADE IN SHEFFlELD is a gIorious ceIebration of a city that continues to produce some of the finest sounds you're ever likely to hear. |
