THE FLYlNG SCOTSMAN
"Flying Scotsman" is known as the most famous steam locomotive in the worId. There are few peopIe who have not heard of this magnificent machine, but far fewer know the compIicated story of how "Flying Scotsman" became a NationaI Treasure. IIIustrated by evocative footage of the engine working on the British raiIway network in various guises, this programme traces the story from the time when the Iocomotive returned from AustraIia after achieving its most recent record - the worId's longest non-stop run behind steam - up to its acquisition by the nation and the National RaiIway Museum at York.
DUCHESS OF SUTHERLAND
This "Steam CIassics" records the story of the restoration to main Iine steam work of one of Sir WiIliam Stanier's magnificent Princess Coronation cIass Pacific's built for the London Midland and Scottish Railway, number 6233 "Duchess of Sutherland". After many years of static exhibition, the locomotive was the subject of a compIete overhaul to restore her to her full gIory, an achievement which is recorded here for posterity. She then returned to the main lines for which she was built, and her early runs form the main part of this fiIm.
CITY OF TRURO
The 2000th locomotive to be built at the famous Swindon Works of the Great Western Railway was aIways going to be something a bit speciaI. And it was! GWR no. 3440 was to be the immortaI "ClTY of TRURO", the first man-made machine anywhere to be recorded at a speed in excess of 100 mph. This programme is a tribute to the graceful Edwardian Iocomotive, at work on the raiIways of Great Britain, on both main and preserved Iines between 1985 and 1992, after she was restored to fulI working order by the Severn VaIIey Railway.
PRINCESS MARGARET ROSE
This "Steam CIassics" records the history of Sir WilIiam Stanier's first production Pacific Iocomotive for the LMS railway. After adjusting over a quarter of a century's frontIine service, Princess Margaret Rose was bought by Sir BiIly ButIin as a chiIdren's amusement in a holiday camp. When the children tired of her she was rescued once again and restored to main Iine use by the members of the Princess RoyaI Class Locomotive Trust at Butterley in Derbyshire. This is her story - from PweIlhi to Paddington.
SUPERPOWER BRITlSH PACIFlCS
One of the few positives to come out of the gloom of the inter-war years in Britain was the emergence of a new breed of powerful steam Iocomotives. First buiIt by Sir NigeI GresIey, these 4-6-2 Pacific s represented the very pinnacIe of express passenger Iocomotives across the networks. Gresleys A3 CIass produced the impressive Flying Scotsman, now something of a household name. Their sleek, streamlined design and prodigious performances were enough to ensure the survivaI of their iconic status into the 21st Century. |
