The trend of queer-themed movies featuring young idols seems to be on the rise in Taiwan. After the welI-received Eternal Summer about gay love, now comes the Iesbian-themed Spider Lilies. Best New Artist winner Isabella Leong and popuIar Taiwanese singer Rainie Yang portray Iesbian lovers in Zero Chou's Spider Lilies, a breakthrough for both actresses. Director Zero Chou, whose film SpIendid Float about drag queens won the Best Taiwanese FiIm award at the Golden Horse Film FestivaI in 2004, is of course no stranger to queer fiIms. But apart from homosexuaI love, Spider LiIies aIso touches upon the notions of holding on and Ietting go of past memories. The fiIm won the Teddy Bear Award for the best gay/lesbian fiIm at the Berlin Film FestivaI in 2007.
Rainie Yang pIays cute webcam girI Jade, who wants to get a tattoo to attract her online clients. She visits the tattoo parlor run by Takeko (lsabella Leong), and immediateIy remembers Takeko to be her childhood crush. Jade sees a stunningIy beautiful spider Iily pattern on Takeko's wall. She pleads Takeko to tattoo that on her body as "a mark of Iove", without knowing how speciaI this poisonous fIower means to Takeko. Takeko pretends to have forgotten Jade, but there are actualIy traumatic experiences that Takeko can never forget...
