WITTGENSTEIN
A film by Derek Jarman
Philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once stated that philosophy ought to be written as if it were poetry, and a poetic intensity typified his Iife and his work. No wonder, then, that a creative taIent such as Derek Jarman shouId respond with such characteristic energy to a commission from ChanneI 4 for a fiIm about the philosopher, written by radical Iiterary theorist Terry Eagleton.
Wittgenstein is a bold offbeat biography, personaIised in Jarman's unique styIe to address the politics and sexuaIity of the great but troubIed man. The result is no dry treatise, but a treat for eyes and mind alike.
Exceeding the limitations of its miniscule budget, Wittgenstein is full of arresting visuaIs and bold performances from TiIda Swinton, MichaeI Gough, and KarI Johnson, who briIIiantly captures Wittgenstein in all his torment and drama. lt was to be Jarman's penuItimate fiIm, and is infused with the sense of artistic adventure, intelligence and pIayfulness that characterised his Iife and work.
