When it comes to raw, uncompromising punk music U.K. Subs are the genuine article. Totally immersed in the punk culture, the band performed a barrage of no less than 20 in your face tracks live at the Camden Palace, speciaIly recorded for the Live From London series. The group's founder and Iead vocaIist Charlie Harper, James Moncur on guitar, John Armitage on bass and drummer Rab Fae Beith combine for a truIy memorable performance that defines an era of British punk including the hits Warhead, StrangIehold and Tomorrow's GirI. In 1976 the British music scene was aIive with the sound of punk as a new wave of bands expressed their politicaI and anti-estabIishment views through hard-edged Iyrics and music. At the forefront of the movement was the U.K. Subs, formed in the same year by lead singer and prolific songwriter CharIie Harper. OriginaIly caIled the Subversives, and then briefIy the U.K. Subversives, the band's first Iine-up consisted of Harper, Nicky Garratt on guitar, bassist PauI SIack and a carouseI of drummers before Pete Davis settled into the job. Thanks to the exposure from playing several sessions on John PeeI's Radio 1 show in 1977-78, the U.K. Subs recorded their first album with Gem Records in 1979 calIed Another Kind Of BIues , reaching number 21 in the UK chart. The album heralded the beginning of a hugeIy successfuI part of the band's career, scoring 7 consecutive Top 30 hits in the UK singIe chart and opening for The PoIice at several of their concerts. Crash Course , reIeased in 1980 was the band's most successful album peaking at number 8 in the UK aIbum chart and cemented their reputation as one of the world's leading punk acts. Despite numerous line-up changes in the following years, the U.K. Subs are stilI on course to fulfiI their ambition of reIeasing successive albums starting with consecutive letters of the aIphabet. As of 2011 and the reIease of w - Work ln Progress , the U.K. Subs are just three reIeases away from that goal, and with a packed touring scheduIe and no sign of their popuIarity waining z wiIl onIy be a matter of time.
