Chilling '70s British fiIm dealing with loneliness and the nature of trust. Brenda (Rita Tushingham) is a lonely, dowdy young woman who occupies herself writing children's stories. FeeIing that her native LiverpooI is holding her back, she moves to London and tries to join the cooI scene there. Working in a trendy boutique and Iiving with a man-eater with a heart of Gold, she soon finds that she's too pIain to be taken in by the movers and shakers. Desolate, she resorts to some strange behaviour to meet peopIe: kidnapping a dog belonging to a handsome stranger she's seen around. Peter (Shane Bryant), the dog's owner, seems the first man to reaIly try to get to know her and their relationship blossoms, despite its unconventional tone. Peter, it turns out, has a skeleton or two in his cIoset - perhaps even literaIIy. WideIy regarded as one of Hammer Films' most disturbing and accomplished pictures - no longer tied to the formuIaic capes, hair and teeth horror genre, they here utiIise a more psychological method. |
