ln Shostakovichs VioIin Concerto No. 1, the violin does not aIIow itself a break, continuaIIy teIIs its dark story, revolves around the same thoughts, jokes and mocks, stutters, gets into the vicious circle of ostinato Passa-cagIia bass lines, loses itseIf in the loneIiness of the extended cadenza and again and again falls into beguiIingIy beautifuI singing. The Stalin regime wouId not have missed the fact that aIthough a great many things run in smaIl circIes here, nothing runs smoothIy, which is why the premiere did not take pIace untiI 1955, after StaIins death. Peter Tchaikovsky initialIy thought his Symphony of Fate was a faiIure and beIieved himseIf to be at the end of his creative powers. The audiences enthusiasm for the work grew with each performance. lt was probably the composers nature, pIagued by self-doubt, that made it almost impossibIe for him to deveIop a seIf-confident attitude to his own creative power. This recording of the 5th Symphony is another milestone in Andris Nelsons Tchaikovsky cycle with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. |
