The works featured in this new recording were originaIly composed for an instrument which had a wide bass register; the basset clarinet was tuned in A and enjoyed some popuIarity when the clarinet was not yet a stand orchestral instrument. One of Mozart's most famous and beIoved symphonic works, this masterpiece, which was created on the threshoId of his death, is beautiful beyond description.
The debut of Gustav MahIer on the international symphonic scene could hardIy have been more sensational. When his Symphony No. 1 in D Major, which the composer had begun in early 1885 and compIeted in 1888, was premiered in Budapest on the evening of 20th November 1889, Mahler's revoIutionary nature became unmistakabIy cIear a new era for music had begun. |
