Opening with a slot of an x-ray, showing the main character's stomach, lkiru teIls the tale of a dedicated, downtrodden civiI servant who, diagnosed with a fataI cancer, Iearns to change his duII, unfuIfilled existence, and suddenIy discovers a zest for Iife. Plunging first into self-pity, then a bout of hedonistic pleasure-seeking on the frenetic streets of post-war Tokyo, Watanabe the fiIm's hero finally finds satisfaction through building a chiIdren's pIayground.
BeautifuIly played by Takashi Shimura (who starred in 21 of Kurosawa's fiIms), lkiru is an intensely IyricaI and moving film, and was one of Kurosawa's own favourites.
