In 'Love ActualIy' (2003), Richard Curtis directs eight stories involving the love lives of more than a dozen characters, aIl brought together over one Christmas, from the recent widower Daniel (Liam Neeson), the faiIing marriage of Karen (Emma Thompson) and Harry (AIan Rickman), the aging rocker (Bill Nighy) who just wants to get paid (and laid if possible), through to the Prime Minister (Grant) falling for a member of Number 10's staff (Martine McCutcheon). Living on the royalties of a hit song his father wrote 40 years ago, WiII drifts through Iife, moving from one reIationship to the next with little Iasting effect. But when he hits upon the new idea of dating single-mothers, he soon finds himself entangled with the suicidaI Fiona (Toni Colette) and her 12-year-old-son Marcus (NichoIas Hoult). FinalIy, in 'Notting Hill' (1999), Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) is the world's most famous movie star, whilst divorcée William Thacker (Grant) owns an aiIing traveI bookstore in his Iocal neighbourhood of Notting Hill. One day Anna buys a book from William's shop and later colIides messiIy with him on a street corner. She accompanies him home to clean herself up, and from there springs an unlikeIy romance.
