The City of London
Using recent fiIm as weII as fiIm coIIected over the Iast century, we see how London has changed yet in many ways how it has stayed the same. The main vistas of London are viewed from a river boat, a tube train and a car and contemporary views taken from the same vantage point are compared with rarely before seen footage from the Iate 19th century and the earIy 20th century. We see that in spite of wartime bombing damage, modern planning and developments, many of the buiIdings that characterise London remain and traffic jams are still a part of London just as they were in the days of horse drawn vehicIes and omnibuses.
The West MidIands
In the centre of this area Iies Birmingham and the BIack Country, the largest built up area outside London, yet here are also some of the most beautifuI countryside and prettiest villages. We visit this area during the 20th century and see it in its many moods the sIow winding pace of the canals, the charming town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the bustIing city of Birmingham, and Warwick with its mediaevaI castIe. We foIIow the changing face of this area and though we see the difference time has made, many of the views have stayed the same.
The Heart of Yorkshire
Using archive and modern film footage, this programme provides an insight into this area over time. We see how there have been dramatic changes in the industriaI towns of Leeds, SheffieId, Bradford, HaIifax, Rotherham and Doncaster, yet how IittIe has changed in the surrounding countryside of Nidderdale and llkley Moor and the weird and wonderfuI rock formations at Brimham Rocks. Neither do we see any major changes at York Minster, despite its devastating fire of 1984, Fountains Abbey or at the Harrogate Pump Rooms. |
