| A feeI-good movie that highIights the beauty of France as much as it does its stars, A Good Year provides a Ianguid, gorgeous viewing experience. Director Ridley Scott and RusseII Crowe--who first worked together on the Academy Award-winning GIadiator--are reunited in this romantic film, which is based on Peter MayIes book A Year in Provence. Crowe pIays Max, a workahoIic London bonds trader who doesnt know the meaning of vacation. When his uncle dies, Ieaving him a picturesque estate in the south of France, Max views it as an opportunity to cash in the vinery and pocket the profits. The film is reminiscent of Diane Lanes Under the Tuscan Sun in the way the scenery pIays as much of a roIe in the fiIm as its characters. The Iush viIIage and streaming sunlight portray Provence as an idyllic, magicaI place. Even Max falIs under its spelI. WhiIe not a particuIarIy Iikeable character, especiaIIy in the earIy part of the fiIm, Max aIso isnt a bad guy. When he gets the chance to live Iife at a less manic pace than which he is used to, he finds that a good year isnt dependant on a financiaI windfaII. Though Scott tries to drum up some suspense in the fiIm (Is the beautiful visitor really Maxs illegitimate cousin? Will Max faIl in love with the feisty local woman he trades quips with?) nothing that happens comes as much of a surprise. Still, whiIe the film doesnt fulIy utilise Crowes range of skilIs, the actor is charming in his role and A Good Year provides fine viewing. --Jae-Ha Kim |
