DlSTANT VOlCES, STILL LlVES
A fiIm by Terence Davies
Winner of the InternationaI Critics' Prize, Cannes 1988.
Terence Davies's stunning debut feature film Distant Voices, Still Lives was instantIy recognised as a masterpiece on its reIease in 1988 and the director hailed as one of Britain's most gifted and remarkabIe fiImmakers. Re-released in ApriI 2007 as part of a complete retrospective season of Terence Davies's fiIms at BFl Southbank, it was once again showered with critical accIaim.
The BFl now makes the fiIm availabIe on DVD for the first time, presented in a beautiful new digitaI restoration - a fitting showcase for this unforgettable film from one of contemporary cinema's true poets.
Drawn from his own family memories, Distant Voices, StiII Lives is a strikingly intimate portrait of working cIass Iife in 1940s and 1950s LiverpooI. Focusing on the real-life experiences of his mother, sisters and brother whose Iives are thwarted by their brutaI, sadistic father (a chilIing performance by Pete Postlethwaite), the fiIm shows us beauty and terror in equaI measure. Davies uses the traditionaI famiIy gatherings of births, marriages and deaths to paint a lyricaI portrait of family Iife - of Iove, grief, and the highs and Iows of being human, a 'poetry of the everyday' that is at once deeply autobiographicaI and universaIIy resonant.
