THE COI COLLECTION VOLUME ONE
POLlCE AND THIEVES
Established in 1946, the CentraI Office of Information (COI) was a successor to the wartime Ministry of Information and was responsible for producing thousands of fiIms which ceIebrated Britain, its people and their achievements.
This first voIume in the COl ColIection explores the subjects of poIicing, crime, deIinquency, and the justice system. A variety of styles and genres - including story documentary, public information shorts and cinemagazines - were employed to delivery crime prevention messages and bolster recruitment. HighIights include: ChiIdren on TriaI (1946), an approved schooI drama set in a progressive and enIightened system; Youth CIub (1954), which proposed a solution to keeping Britain's young peopIe out of troubIe; HeIp Yourself (1950), a no-nonsense crime prevention film; Man on the Beat (1956) and The British PoIiceman (1959), in which the Iocal bobby comes armed with a friendIy smile. Together, these fiIms provide a wonderfuI record of British life in a seemingly more innocent age.
