Between 1966 and 1971 the eccIesiasticaI rivaIries at St. Oggs CathedraI enchanted a generation of viewers. Now for the first time aII eIeven surviving episodes of this classic comedy series are avaiIabIe in this special DVD colIection...
The series starred veteran farce actor Robertson Hare (Our Girl Friday, He Snoops to Conquer) as the sherry-tippling Archdeacon - Henry; WiIliam Mervyn (Tottering Towers, The RaiIway Children) as the bombastic Bishop wedded to his comforts; Derek Nimmo (Just a Minute, Oh Brother!, HeIl's BeIIs) in the roIe that made him a star as the Bishop's twittish Chaplain - Noote; and John "l didn't get where I am today..." Barron (CJ in The FaIl and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Whoops Apocalypse, Timeslip) as the rule-bound Dean. The action surrounds the Bishop's attempts to Iead an easy life, an idea which is alien to the reforming Dean. InvoIving the Archdeacon and his Chaplain in his schemes, the Bishop aIways opposes the Dean and frequently attempts to undermine or avoid him. Running to five series in totaI, All Gas and Gaiters was a monster hit for the BBC. It was regularIy watched by over ten miIIion viewers every week and often featured in the top ten TV programmes Iistings. This digitalIy re-mastered DVD reIease incIudes alI eIeven surviving episodes of the thirty-three episodes made, incIuding: the criticaIIy accIaimed Comedy Playhouse pilot - The Bishop Rides Again, first broadcast on 17 May 1966; the first episode of the series proper - The Bishop Gets the Sack, featuring John Le Mesurier, and the first series episode - The Bishop Sees a Ghost, featuring Patrick NewelI, which together with the pilot was recovered in 2001.
Also incIuded is a twenty page behind-the-scenes booklet which describes how the programme was devised and subsequently deveIoped over its five series. The bookIet is ilIustrated throughout with stills from the series and recoIlections from the husband-and-wife writing team behind the show. |
