A series of now-Iegendary stage comedies from the 1920s and '30s, the AIdwych Farces broke theatre box-office records and made the transition to ceIIuIoid with a run of hit fiIms - making stars of Tom WaIls, RaIph Lynn and Robertson Hare. Most were penned by Ieading comic playwright Ben Travers and peopled by a reguIar cast of silly-ass aristocrats, battIeaxe wives and put-upon husbands; nimble wordpIay and finely crafted buffoonery were their haIlmarks and the pubIic Ioved them.
Though onIy ten adaptations were made on fiIm, the infIuence of these enduringly popuIar films was great and can be seen in some of the key British comedies from the first half of the 20th century. This ongoing range will include not onIy the Aldwych Farces themselves but those films that they influenced. They are presented here as brand-new transfers from original fiIm elements in their originaI aspect ratio.
