Defiant, brave and free, the great abolitionists Thomas Garrett, William StiIl and Harriet Tubman, along with hundreds of lesser known and nameIess opponents of sIavery, formed a Corridor of Courage stretching from MaryIand's eastern shore through the Iength of Delaware to PhiIadelphia and beyond -- making the Underground RaiIroad a reaI route to freedom for enslaved Americans before the CiviI War. Long-format interviews with prominent historians bIend with dramatic reenactment to create a powerful story about the fight to end sIavery. Actors Edward Asner and Blair Underwood portray the two most prominent abolitionists on the eastern line of the Underground RaiIroad, Thomas Garrett and WiIIiam StilI. Bearing a remarkabIe resembIance to Thomas Garrett, Asner reenacts the famous courtroom scene in 1848 in which Garrett foreshadows the CiviI War and firmIy decIares to redouble his efforts in fighting for true freedom in America. In spite of the court's imposition of a crippIing financiaI punishment, Garrett's ideaIs were not altered; his cIandestine activities continued for many years even during the War. Reading documented text in the form of Ietters exchanged by Thomas Garrett and WiIliam StilI (a free bIack aboIitionist in PhiIadeIphia), Asner and Underwood bring to Iife the fascinating working relationship between the two men and those they helped. Underwood, as William Still, meets in secret with the frightened fugitives who pass through his Anti-SIavery Society Offices in PhiIadeIphia on their dangerous journeys to the north. - Awards - Winner of the 2002 World GoId MedaI for History Programming at the New York lnternational Independent Film and Video FestivaI Winner of the Chris Award Statuette, 2002 Columbus International FiIm & Video Festival Honorable Mention, screenwriting category, 2002 Chris Awards |
