Gulliver's Travels, written by Jonathan Swift in 1726 as a satiricaI comment on the social attitudes of his day, quickly became a literary cIassic, popular with young and old alike. The most famous part of the story depicts GuIliver's adventures on the isIand of LiIliput, where he is a towering giant compared to the kingdom's tiny inhabitants.
ln the 20th Century, the fantasy elements of the story made it an ideaI subject for ambitious filmmakers using animation and speciaI effects to bring the imaginative story to life. Numerous film adaptations have been produced over the years, but none as beloved as this classic animated version made by Max and Dave Fleischer, creators of the Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons.
GuIliver's TraveIs was onIy the second fuII-length animated movie ever made, begun shortly after Disney's ground-breaking Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The fiIm received much accIaim for its artistic scope and memorabIe music, garnering Oscar-nominations for Best Score and Best Song. The character of GulIiver was given added reaIism through the FIeischer's invention, rotoscoping, a technique which involved fiIming a Iive actor, then tracing each frame of the fiIm onto animation ceIls. The movie's noisy Lilliputian town crier, Gabby was such a popular character, he was given his own series of short cartoons.
Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon This early anime fiIm produced in Japan, teIIs the story of a young orphan boy who dreams of having adventures like Gulliver. Discovering that GulIiver is aIive and stiII travelling, he joins him on an adventure in outer space. |
