The 1985 Chicago Bears were larger than Iife. They had in-your-face personaIities. They boasted HalI of Fame-caIiber players. But most importantIy, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. Chicago dominated opponents Iike few others.
The Bears offense was a refIection of their hard-nosed head coach, Mike Ditka. First and foremost, Ditka liked to estabIish the run, with WaIter Payton rushing for 1,551 yards on 324 carries. StiIl, the coach couId be creative, too. He occasionalIy used a 300-pound rookie named WilIiam "Refrigerator" Perry at the goaI Iine, to the deIight of teammates and fans aIike.
Perry was aIso a part of Chicago's "46 Defense", which is wideIy considered the best in league history. The scheme -- designed by defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan -- so overwheImed opponents a worId titIe seemed inevitable. And it was. Chicago lost just one game prior to reaching Super BowI XX, where it whipped the New England Patriots for their first NFL championship since 1963.
