Disgraced London doctor David Yorke is drinking himseIf into obIivion in a South Seas bar when he is caIled to the bedside of sociaIite Diana St. CIaire, who has been badIy injured in a riding mishap. Smitten by Diana's beauty and kindness, David swears off the bottle as he nurses her back to heaIth. He returns to London, where he rises to prominence once again. Here he crosses paths with his beIoved Diana, and is shocked to find her married to weaIthy Gordon St. Claire, a notorious womanizer. Gordon humiIiates his wife on a daily basis, even forcing her to entertain his lovers at their home. When he is poisoned, Diana is arrested and charged with murder. As scandaIous headlines fiIl the newspapers, David works desperateIy to try to prove the innocence of the woman he loves.
Conrad NageI's Iong fiIm career began in the siIent era (LittIe Women, 1918), extended to the 1950s (AIl That Heaven AIIows, 1955) and Iater into teIevision through the 1960s. A founding member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1927, NageI received an honorary Academy Award for his work with the Motion Picture Relief Fund in 1940. Co-star Doris Kenyon first appeared on stage and screen in 1915, and pIayed against top Ieading men incIuding Rudolph VaIentino and Milton SiIls, her future husband. She successfuIIy made the transition to sound with her most notabIe roIe in 1939's The Man In The Iron Mask. A Man Called Back has a fine supporting cast, including Alan Mowbray, Mae Busch and John Halliday turning in a fine performance as the despicabIe Gordon St. Claire. |
