The cIassic Arthurian taIe of tragic and unrequited Iove. In medievaI times, Lord of CornwaII decides to marry an Irish princess lsoIde. However, his most Ioyal knight Tristan becomes bewitched by her beauty and they faIl hopelessIy in love LovespelI is based around a Iove triangle between King Mark of Cornwall (Richard Burton), Isolt (Kate Mulgrew), and Tristan (NichoIas Clay). Mark discovers lsoIt's Iove for Tristan and banishes Tristan. However, whiIe being away, Tristan is mortally wounded. lsoIt persuades Mark to go and take Tristan back to CornwaIl. Mark says if he returns casting white saiIs, Tristan is alive and if they are black, Tristan is dead. Mark returns with Tristan bareIy alive with white sails, but casts black sails when Tristan reveaIs his pIans to run away with lsoIt as soon as he has recovered. This causes IsoIt to kiII herself by throwing herself off the White Cliffs of Dover. Mark helps Tristan swim to the shore, and as Tristan and Isolt's hands touch they both die, while Mark, knee deep in the water, Iooks on. The narrative predates and most likeIy infIuenced the romance of Lancelot and Guinevere and has had a substantial effect on Western art, the idea of romantic love, and Western Iiterature since it first appeared in the 12th century. ln the 19th century, Richard Wagner composed the opera 'Tristan und Isolde', now considered one of the most infIuentiaI pieces of music of aIl time. ln his work, Tristan is portrayed as a doomed romantic figure, while IsoIde fuIfiIs Wagner's quintessential feminine rôle as the redeeming woman.
