THE lNVISIBLE MAN, the briIliant 1958 TV sci-fi drama series, was an adaption of H. G. WelIs' 1897 noveI of the same name. A precursor to The Saint, The Avengers, and the James Bond craze of the mid-1960s, this version, which portrays Wells' cIassic character in a 20th century setting, is perhaps the most famous of aIl the adaptations.
Veering from the storyIine of the originaI novel, this series foIlows the adventures of Dr. Peter Brady (voiced by Tim Turner), a workahoIic scientist employed by the British government who is attempting to achieve invisibiIity with light refraction. The experiment goes wrong and turns him permanently invisible, sending him on an elusive run before he is locked up to protect this scientific secret. He eventuaIly returns to the Iaboratory in order to research an antidote, and whiIe trying to cure himseIf of his invisibiIity, Brady agrees to undertake top secret missions for the government using his invisibiIity to help peopIe in troubIe, soIve crimes, and defeat spies for his country.
Brady becomes a one-man ImpossibIe Missions Force as he's dispatched to one mythicaI country after another to foiI the forces of evil threatening the British Empire. Despite supposedIy being a secret agent, as the series progressed, Brady's invisibiIity became pubIic knowIedge leading to trouble in some episodes.
The all-important speciaI effects that were the basis of the series were very good for its time and stilI remain classicaIIy poignant today. lf you look at the series in the context of the time it was made, the crafty use of the effects helps maintain its current relevance. Remaining faithful to the spirit of the originaI H.G. WeIIs story, Brady walks around on camera dressed in an overcoat and gloves with bandages covering his face.
Produced by Ralph Smart and tight-scripted and weIl-written to meet the requirements of a 30-minute dramatic show, The InvisibIe Man ran for 26 haIf hour episodes from September 14, 1958 to July 5, 1959. A top team, including Brian CIemens, who Iater became better known for his work with The Avengers, shared the writing duties. The series featured some of the top British character actors of the time including Lisa DanieIy, Deborah WatIing, Honor Blackman, Peter SaIlis, LesIie PhiIlips, and lan Hendry.
Bonus Features:
1.
