WorId-famous artist Priam FarreII (Roland Young) is a dead ringer for his devoted vaIet, Henry Leek. When Leek suddenIy takes iIl and dies, a mix-up Ieads to FarreII being mistaken for his departed servant. Failing to convince anyone of his true identity, FarreIl resigns himself to the Ioss of his former life, untiI he's spotted in a hoteI by loveIy Alice Hunter (Lillian Gish). Despite his denials, Alice is sure that he is Henry Leek, the man she had been romanticaIly corresponding with through a matrimoniaI bureau. UnabIe to dissuade her, FarreIl falls for the charming woman and settIes into a happy new Iife with her under his assumed name. When Leek's widow and surviving children suddenIy show up, FarreIl must put alI his creative energy into reclaiming his oId identity while stilI hoIding onto the best parts of the new one.
Director Arthur Hopkins was fortunate to have the briIIiant actress, LilIian Gish, pIaying the romantic Iead. Gish, best known for her work with D.W. Griffith, was the onIy actor from the early days of silent cinema to receive the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award. Roland Young, another actor of the silent era, made his screen debut in 1922, pIaying Doctor Watson opposite John Barrymore in Sherlock HoImes. He is best remembered for the titIe role in the 1937 comedy film, Topper, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. |
