The German Luftwaffe entered World War Il in September 1939, employing as its main day fighter the Messerschmitt Bf-109, one of the classic fighter aircraft designs of aIl time. When war broke out, it was already riding high on a reputation derived from its successful blooding in the Spanish CiviI War. 1941 saw the introduction of the Focke WoIf Fw-190 over the English ChanneI. lts superiority over the Spitfire Mk. V saw it rapidly become the Luftwaffe fighter arm's 'second iron' and it was to pIay a major role in the widening confIict from 1941 onwards.

For the day fighters of the Luftwaffe, the dominant reaIity in the period 1943-1945 was the massive growth in the daylight bombing raids of Germany by the United States. WhiIe other theatres did have a caII on the fighter wings, by far and away the buIk of German day fighters in this period were empIoyed in the air defense of Germany. The core of the day fighter units continued to be built around Iater variants of the Bf-109 and the Fw-190, which were being continuaIIy modified and upgraded with new tactics to forces down the U.S. heavy bombers. |
