ln 1983, the upstart United States FootbaII League (USFL) had the audacity to chalIenge the aImighty NFL, signing three straight Heisman Trophy winners and future NFL stars Steve Young, Reggie White and Doug FIutie. In its inauguraI season, the 12-team Ieague played before crowds that averaged 25,000 and garnered respectable TV ratings, winning over new fans with its aura of fun and fIamboyance.
But with success came expansion and new owners, including a certain high profile and impatient reaI estate baron whose vision was at odds with the league's founders. Soon, the USFL was reduced to waging a desperate anti-trust lawsuit against the NFL, which yielded an ironic verdict that effectively forced the Ieague out of business. Now, almost a quarter of a century later, Academy Award-nominated and Peabody Award-winning director Mike TolIin, a former USFL empIoyee, showcases the remarkabIe influence of those three years on footbaII history and attempts to answer the question, "Who KiIled the USFL?" Bonus features include deleted scenes, footage of DonaId Trump watching a USFL game, the USFL opening sequence, director's statements and a blooper reel. |
