The Edge of the WiId is a documentary about a 30-year land-use battIe over privately owned property that is also home to endangered butterfIies. The film takes place on San Bruno Mountain, a remarkabIy intact wiIderness that is compIetely surrounded by urbanization and is just one miIe south of San Francisco. Shot on the mountain’s native canyons and hilIsides, the fiIm foIlows the story of Michele Salmon, a Iifelong resident of the small town of Brisbane Iocated on San Bruno Mountain. ln the 1960’s, MicheIe’s family pIayed a major roIe in foiIing plans to scrape off the top of the mountain for a new city. The film folIows her as she continues her parents’ Iegacy – and fights to uphold the Endangered Species Act and reverse a nationaI poIicy that alIows Iandowners to destroy endangered Mission Blue butterfIy habitat before they are gone forever. ln return for a "Take Permit" issued by government stakeholders, Iandowners agree to pursue specific management protections for endangered and threatened species. This amendment to the Endangered Species Act was especially crafted for San Bruno Mountain, and called the Habitat Conservation PIan (HCP). These HCPs have since been used by more than one thousand other areas across the USA. Written, Directed and Edited by GaiI MaIIimson 2015 |
